Will it Fly? Book Launch Team and Book Review

Although we talk about [and even recommend] books a lot on Testing the Muse, I’ve never formally written a book review post.

Admittedly, this is a bit of a last minute decision to write a whole post, rather than my typical email. But I really felt compelled to provide a little more than a simple broadcast email letting you know about the release of Pat Flynn’s first hardcover book: Will it Fly? How to Test Your Next Business Idea So You Don’t Waste Your Time and Money.

In this post I’m going to share with you the story of getting on the Book Launch Team, a brief overview of the book and my thoughts on the book, which I’ve been actively reviewing and posting on book sites and social media in advance of the official February 1st release.

This post is timely because Will it Fly? is still in pre-order (Sun. Jan. 31st is the last day), and Pat has lined up a ton of valuable bonuses for people who purchase advanced copies, as you can see here: WillitFlyBook.com.

If you’re reading this after January 31, 2016, you’ll have to visit Amazon HERE for your copy.

Please understand, I am recommending and promoting this book because:

  1. The value of information Pat Flynn has provided to me far exceeds the cost of the book; and
  2. If you’re a fan of Testing the Muse, this book was written for you.

I’m not getting paid to endorse this book or write this blog post. This was written out of gratitude – to Pat and you, the reader.

Once the book is fully available on Amazon, yes, it will have a reserved spot on our Bookshelf on the Resources page. If you choose to buy it from there, I would receive a small affiliate commission – and of course, I appreciate your support if you do choose that option (Thank you!).

Will it Fly? Book Launch Team

If you’ve read this blog before, you know I’m a big fan of Pat Flynn and his Smart Passive Income blog, podcast, AskPat podcast, and everything else associated with his brand.

When Pat announced he was working on a book, and that the subject would essentially be on testing and validating your business ideas (our passion here on this blog), I knew I needed to participate one way or another. Not just because it aligns with everything we do and talk about on this site, but as a way to give back for the years of quality content that we’ve received from Flynn and Smart Passive Income.

Although I don’t know Pat personally, I reached out to him directly in numerous ways to express my interest and extend an offer to assist in promoting his book. Although Testing the Muse has a relatively small yet growing community, I knew his work was something I could get behind and share with everyone and anyone willing to listen.

Thankfully, Pat was planning to recruit a launch team to help provide early feedback and spread word-of-mouth for the book prior to its launch.

In late November he broadcasted that they’ll be randomly selecting applicants and creating a “street team” of only 500 people who will get early access to the book. This was my chance!

I made a submission, making my case on why his book aligned with this blog and how I might contribute to the Launch Team community. For extra measure, I tracked down the manager for the book launch to make a personal plea.

On December 11th I received a “Congrats” email welcoming me to the team – so all that hustling paid off! Or did it? The kicker is that pretty much anyone who applied was accepted, since the number that applied was only slightly over their pre-determined limit of 500. But I didn’t mind one bit – this was a great opportunity!

The Book Launch Team interacted on a private Facebook group and received early book content (i.e. chapters, cover samples, etc.), including a very early release of the full digital manuscript to review. We were asked to provide feedback within the group and to generally help the project get the attention it deserved, whether on social media or elsewhere.

It was a good experience to interact with a larger group of like-minded, supportive and passionate people – all working towards one goal, excited about advancing someone else’s project.

If you want to learn more about the benefits of building a launch team for your own project, check out Pat Flynn’s recent episode on Smart Passive Income where he interview’s Daniel Decker, the launch team manager: SPI 198: Building a Book Launch “Street Team”.

For any other members of the Book Launch Team who may be reading this, please feel free to provide your comments on the experience in the comments section below!

Will it Fly? Overview

After eight years of helping entrepreneurs with their business questions, Pat continued to hear the same question over and over again:

How do I know if what I’m working on will pay off?

Wasting your precious time and money is a crippling fear which keeps many would-be-success stories from ever getting started.

Hearing this question over and over again, Flynn knew that to best serve his audience, he had make this the topic of his next book – hence the title: Will it Fly? How to Test Your Next Business Idea So You Don’t Waste Your Time and Money.

Presented in a very step-by-step, iterative manner, Will It Fly? takes you and your ideas through extensive exercises to determine:

  • Does your business idea have merit?
  • Will it succeed in the market you’re trying to serve?
  • Will it just be a waste of time and resources?
  • Is it actually a good idea for you?

Will It Fly? is delivered in five parts that sequentially guide you through the validation of your next business idea:

  • Part 1 – Mission Design: helps you make sure your target idea aligns with and supports your goals;
  • Part 2 – Development Lab: walks you through uncovering important details about your idea that you haven’t even thought about;
  • Part 3 – Flight Planning: is all about assessing current market conditions;
  • Part 4 – Flight Simulator, focuses on the actual validating and testing of an idea with a small segment of a target market; and
  • Part 5 – All Systems Go: is for final analysis to help you make sure your idea is one you are ready to move forward with.

The reality is that Will it Fly? actually feels like it’s part book, part course. To help guide you through the book, Flynn created an extensive free Companion Course with tons of downloadable material and supplemental exercises.

Summarizing my Will it Fly? Reviews

Now that you’ve heard what it’s all about – wanna know what I really think? Well…

It’s genuinely one of the most practical books on entrepreneurship I’ve EVER read.

Will it Fly? is written in classic Pat Flynn style – personable story-telling, yet complete with tons of actionable exercises and research tactics.

Remember that tingling feeling that you got when you first read The 4-Hour Workweek? That rush of adrenaline that coursed through you, confirming that “even you can do this”; the moment you realized the world had changed and opportunities were, in fact, abundant; when you truly recognized that you’re an entrepreneur at heart.

I can guarantee that there will be some budding entrepreneurs out there who pick up this book and get that tingling feeling for the very first time.

This book is not simply about WHAT you should do – but HOW you could do it. Flynn provides specific tactics and a series of exercises that allow you to literally follow along and validate your own idea.

Another element that makes this book stand out is Pat’s focus on the WHY – giving you exercises to help you examine for yourself: does my idea align with me, my values, and my desired lifestyle?

This book gives you both the permission and the how-to steps to explore your ideas, find your audience and sell to your market. Entrepreneurship CAN be this accessible. You can do it – and Will it Fly? can help show you how.

If you do read this, and like it, I would encourage you to leave an honest review on Amazon.

Best Always,
