In addition to business validation questions, a few of the primary themes I hear over and over again in my inbox revolve around writing copy and building an audience.


If you’re looking to draw in customers with your writing – whether that’s on a blog, marketing emails, or a product validation campaign – you really must build a loyal following of people. Nobody wants to find themselves shouting into an empty auditorium (even you do have to start out that way).


You need to have an engaged audience who believe in your message and will help you grow your ideas.


But how do you build an audience with your writing? Well, I have an awesome [free] ebook for you at the end of this post, but first let’s first take a quick look at three major steps to attract your audience.



3 Steps to Attract your Audience



Clarify your Value Proposition


Before you begin, look at your writing just like a physical product.


Find the value in your work for your followers. What will they be getting in exchange for their time?


If the value isn’t there, you can’t attract an audience. Get a really clear vision of what you’re looking to give people, whether that’s a new way to live a healthy life, a way to build wealth, or even a fictional world to explore.


Once you know what you’re offering people, you can find a way to give it to those who would want it most. Brainstorm words that describe your work and keep it to choose keywords to attract the specific followers who will be into your work.



 Identify your Core Audience


Once you’ve got an idea of what you’re offering, you can start to think about who is going to benefit the most, who needs your product. Really develop a picture of the person who will be in your audience.


For example:

  • Where else do they shop?
  • What do they do on the weekends?
  • What are their goals?


Knowing your audience helps you attract them faster and easier, as you can write about things that they are interested in.


You can look for other blogs your ideal audience reads and maybe write a guest post to further your reach. You can even brand your writing similarly to other products people in your audience enjoy.


You want your writing to fit in seamlessly with everything else your audience consumes.



Engage with your Audience


Next you need to find a way to reach your target audience. This should be easy because you already know who they are and what they’re looking for.


The question now is, how do they find it? What types of media do they use most? Reach them through those channels, whether that’s social media, email lists, or just on your blog.


The great thing is that quality trumps quantity, so you can pick the best social media platform to focus on and not post a little on a bunch of platforms.


When you devote time to quality posts, you will attract more followers than scatter shot posting over several platforms.
